Year 7 Waiting Lists close and are replaced by the in year admissions process and waiting lists.
Parents/Carers will need to re-apply as a In Year admission, if still waiting for a secondary school place.

In-Year Applications

If you are looking for a place at Harris Science Academy East London because you have recently moved into the area, or your child is at another secondary school and you feel that a change of school would benefit his/her education and/or general well-being, you are entitled to apply for a school place.

To apply for a place, please name Harris Science Academy East London on the London Borough of Newham Application form.  If you don’t live in Newham, you can still apply – just name the Academy on the application form for the borough in which you live.

Please note completing an In Year Admission form does not guarantee a place. Please refer to our Admission Policy for full information.

For parents/carers who wish to appeal

Parent(s) wishing to appeal against the Academy’s decision on admissions, for any year group, should complete an Appeal Form stating the reason for the appeal based on the published Admissions Criteria.

If you wish to appeal, you must contact the Admissions Team who will send you an Appeals Form to complete.

Completed forms should be sent to the Admissions Officer:

Harris Science Academy
Clock Mill, Three Mills Lane
London
E3 3DU

Completed Appeal Forms for Year 7 must be received by the Academy by the closing date 28th March 2025 by 4pm.

The appeals will be heard in private by an Independent Appeal Panel. The Clerk to the Appeal Panel will make an appointment within a reasonable time.  Appeals may be made in English or the Parents’/Carers’ first language. Only one appeal per application is allowed. You may include a friend at the meeting.

The Appeal Hearing

The Academy will arrange for an Independent Appeals Panel to consider the Academy's reasons for refusal and your reasons for wanting to attend the Academy. The Panel will consist of three people (two will have education experience and one will be an independent person with no education experience).

The Panel will consider the case put forward by you and the Academy. They must consider the admission arrangements for the Academy and the reasons why you want to attend this particular school.  The Panel must exercise its discretion by balancing the weight of your argument (for wanting to attend) against the Academy’s reasons for refusal i.e. the prejudice that one more student would cause to the education of the students already offered and the Health and Safety of all the students already attending the Academy, also taking into account the Academy's published admission arrangements.

The decision of the Independent Appeals Panel is binding on the Admissions Authority and the Parents.

Consultation to Change Admissions Criteria for Harris Science Academy East London from September 2026

Harris Science Academy East London (HSAEL) opened in September 2022 after East London Science School closed. At the time, HSAEL mirrored the admissions policy of East London Science School to ensure continuity. Now the Academy in entering its third year, and proposals are at an advanced stage to move into new accommodation, the Academy is consulting on new admissions arrangements.

A copy of the proposed admissions policy can be found here Consultation-on-Admissions-Policy-2026-27

The substantive changes to the proposed admissions policy are summarised below:

  • An increase in the published admissions number from 120 to 150 in Year 7.
  • Simplification of the distance oversubscription criteria to remove references to zones around the Academy. This has been replaced by straight line distance, with those living closest to the Academy given preference. This change brings the HSAEL admissions policy in line with the Newham preferred oversubscription criteria.

There are no other substantive changes proposed.

The consultation on these changes will last for six weeks, starting on Monday 7th October and concluding on Monday 18th November.

Responses to the consultation must be in writing, addressed to the Principal, by email on admissions@harrisscienceeastlondon.org.uk (subject line: Admissions Consultation 2026) or by post to: Harris Science Academy East London, Three Mill Lane, London, E3 3DU.
