House System
We have three houses at the Academy, which students are assigned to when they first join in Year 7.
The house system creates a sense of belonging for our students, who regularly compete with each other in our house competitions and celebrate each other’s success in the fortnightly house assemblies.
Each house is assigned to a famous scientist who are all unique and have had to overcome adversity in their journey, to becoming successful. They represent our diverse community at the Academy.
Clock Mill: Hawking Stephen Hawking was an English theoretical physicist whose theory of exploding black holes drew upon both relativity theory and quantum mechanics. |
Custom House: Jemison As a doctor, engineer, and NASA astronaut, Mae Jemison has always reached for the stars. In 1992, Jemison became the first African American woman to travel in space. |

Student leadership team
All students at HSAEL have the opportunity to lead. At the start of the Academic year students can apply to join one of our committees. Committees meet with the lead staff member once a half term to discuss their areas of the Academy.
All students complete a training day during the first half term to ensure they are prepared to be successful in their leadership role. This includes safeguarding and mental health training to sign post students when needed.
House Captains Staff Lead: Mr MacPherson Responsibility: Lead on student voice to implement change and review the student surveys. |
Diversity and Equality Reps Staff Lead: Mr Christopher Responsibility: Planning and organising of events as part of the Culture and Diversity Calendar. |
Year 7 Transition Mentors Staff Lead: Ms Gozlugol Responsibility: Support year 7 students in their first year at the Academy. |
