House System

We have three houses at the Academy, which students are assigned to when they first join in Year 7.

The house system creates a sense of belonging for our students, who regularly compete with each other in our house competitions and celebrate each other’s success in the fortnightly house assemblies.

Each house is assigned to a famous scientist who are all unique and have had to overcome adversity in their journey, to becoming successful. They represent our diverse community at the Academy.

Clock Mill: Hawking

Stephen Hawking was an English theoretical physicist whose theory of exploding black holes drew upon both relativity theory and quantum mechanics.

Custom House: Jemison

As a doctor, engineer, and NASA astronaut, Mae Jemison has always reached for the stars. In 1992, Jemison became the first African American woman to travel in space.

Lock Keepers: Turing

Alan Turing masterminded the cracking of the German Enigma ciphers, leading to allied victory in the Second World War. In 1945 he turned this into the first design for a digital computer.

Student leadership group

All students at HSAEL have the opportunity to lead. At the start of the academic year students can apply to join one of our committees and go through a very rigorous shortlisting process as shown below.

Stage One: Students complete an online application form.

Stage Two: Students are shortlisted by SLT.

Stage Three: All students vote for their student leader to represent their year group.

All students complete a training day during the autumn term to ensure they are prepared to be successful in their leadership role. This includes safeguarding and mental health training to sign post students when needed.

  • Meet with lead staff member to review student survey and create action plan.

As a result of student voice work at the Academy, students have been at the heart of decision making. Student feedback has led to the following changes to Academy life:

  1. Changes to line up: location, increase in student shout outs, music in the morning, line up readings to showcase student leadership.
  2. More rewards issued – over 90,000 by the end of the year, rewards auctions, rewards parties, rewards trips.
  3. Changes to the lunch system: priority lunch for one year group each day and a quicker queuing system.
  4. Launch of extracurricular programme: 21 clubs to attend before and after school.
  5. Launch of breakfast club so students have a place to go before school.
  6. Intervention sessions for Year 11 and Year 13.
  7. Opportunities to participate in competitive sport at local level, as well as visit museums, hear external speakers and take part in workshops to build your character.
  8. Improved the quality of teaching in all subjects through employing excellent new teachers.
  9. Upgraded the culture in classrooms so students support each other and participate fully.
