Art

Subject intent: Subject Specific Intent for Art and Design:

Studying Art and Design will help students to be leaders in their chosen field because:

it fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for leadership in any profession. By learning to articulate their ideas visually and conceptually, students gain the confidence to innovate and lead projects effectively.

Subject links to HSAEL values

It takes students out of their comfort zone (and shows growth) by:

- challenging them to experiment with new techniques, materials, and concepts. This process of exploration and experimentation encourages students to embrace risk-taking and learn from their mistakes, leading to personal and artistic growth.

It helps students tackle social injustice (and demonstrate responsibility) by:

- providing them with a platform to express and address social issues through their art. By creating works that reflect on and critique societal problems, students learn to use their voices responsibly and advocate for change, raising awareness and promoting justice.

It helps promote ambition by:

- encouraging students to set high standards for their work and pursue excellence in their artistic endeavours. Through the study of diverse artists and movements, students are inspired to push the boundaries of their creativity and aim for professional success in the art world or other fields.

It celebrates diversity (compassion) by:

- exposing students to a wide range of artistic traditions and cultural expressions. This appreciation of diversity helps cultivate empathy and understanding, allowing students to create inclusive and culturally sensitive works that honor different perspectives and experiences.

It helps students develop independence (excellence) by:

- requiring them to take ownership of their projects, from initial concept to final execution. This independence in managing their artistic process teaches students self-discipline, time management, and perseverance, skills that are vital for achieving excellence in any discipline.

How does the study of Art and Design link to future careers?

Studying art and design can open up a world of opportunities for future careers. It nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, which are highly valued in various industries. Careers in graphic design, fashion design, interior design, architecture, advertising, animation, and many more are directly linked to studying art and design. These fields offer exciting and diverse career paths where individuals can express their creativity and make a meaningful impact. Art and design education not only prepares you for specific roles but also equips you with transferable skills that are valuable in any profession. So, embracing art and design can truly pave the way for a fulfilling and successful career journey.

How does Subject link to the extra-curricular provision at HSAEL?

Engaging in art club at HSAEL provides opportunities to further explore creative interests, collaboration with peers on projects, and developing new skills outside the classroom. For example, participating in art exhibitions, joining design competitions, or volunteering for art-related events can not only enhance artistic abilities but also boost confidence and leadership skills. Additionally, art club activities can help students build a strong portfolio that may be beneficial for college applications or future career pursuits in the creative field.
